FORMATTING A PROFESIONAL RESUME

Below are suggested headings for a professional resume. It should always be one page, very simple and easy to read typeface and include no dates. The headings below are suggested for young people; they will change as you get more experience. You may also use this template courtesy of James Madison University. Professionally, most resumes are 8” x 10” so they can be stapled to the back of a head shot. Headings are listed in black, but only include those that apply to you. For example if the only film you’ve done is your yearly birthday party, don’t include film.

Theatre (this will include musicals)

This list is actual plays or musicals in which you have performed. List the most important roles and theatres first. Do not include everything you have ever done if your resume starts looking crowded and busy; just highlight a few important things. Unless you have done a national tour, Broadway, a large regional theatre or stock, you can just list shows under one heading. Do not include dates. Only put the director’s name if he/she is well known in the theatre community. If you were in the chorus you can list “ensemble.”

Vocal Performance

This list is will include choir concerts, singing at events, singing at church etc.

Other Performance

This would include other performances such as ballets.

Film & Television

Training

This list is for where and what you have studied.  You can include workshops or camps in which you have participated.
